Modern Dance Gift Ideas – Must Have’s

The holiday season is just around the corner, and while that usually means frantically searching for the perfect gifts, I have you covered with a guide to fun and fabulous modern dance gift ideas! As a modern/contemporary dancer, I totally get how tiresome it can be to receive yet another ballet dancer statue or a basic pack of hair ties. Let us change things up this year!

Twyla Tharp The Creative Habit Learn It and Use It for Life.

1. The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life – Twyla Tharp

I wanted to start out with something that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with a gift for a dancer. This book is written by the famous American choreographer Twyla Tharp. In this book, she speaks about the different exercises to invoke creativity for choreography. In one of my choreography classes I have taken in college, I have used some of these exercises to introduce new types of movement and stylistic choices into my choreography.  ($13)

2. Apolla Compression Socks

You might be thinking, “Oh great, another pair of socks,” but wait—let me introduce you to the magic of Apolla compression socks! When I’m juggling back-to-back contemporary dance classes, these are my secret weapon against foot cramps. They hug my feet just right, providing that extra boost of ankle stability. ($39)

3. Bose Speaker

I strongly believe that every dancer should have a reliable speaker on hand at all times. This particular speaker is the perfect combination of features for a modern dance gift idea. It’s lightweight and slim enough to fit seamlessly in your backpack. It delivers exceptional sound quality that’s worth every penny. Another bonus is that it’s waterproof and has a 12-hour battery life. ($150)

4. Sharper Image Powerboost Max Massage Gun

Even now, I’d say my massage gun is hands down the best birthday gift I’ve ever received. After those long modern dance rehearsals, easing out my muscles is essential for being at my best the next day. With the 6 included attachments, and the quiet motor, this tool is a dancer’s dream! ($110)

5. Acupressure Mat and Pillow Set

I absolutely love to lay on my acupressure mat at the end of a long day. It not only increases blood flow in the body, but helps with muscle recovery. Any modern dance gift ideas that not only prompts pain relief, but assists in stress relief all in one is almost unheard of! ($26)

6. Oversized Tee Shirts

For those of us who want to keep our wardrobes fresh without draining our budgets, these tee shirts are an ideal choice. With the plentiful color options, you can easily curate the perfect outfit. My personal favorite is the black, because it pretty much matches everything! And let’s face it- when I feel confident in my outfit, I’m convinced my modern dancing ability improves. ($8)

7. KT Tape – Sports Med Pro

As an injury-prone dancer, I always keep KT tape in my bag. This essential tool provides support for muscles, joints, and tendons. What I love about this particular set is that it comes pre cut and offers impressive durability. KT tape practically saved me after my knee surgery when I was getting back into classes! ($18)

8. Spotify Membership

If there was anything off this list that I would say a modern dancer would enjoy, it would be a Spotify membership. Nobody wants to run into an advertisement when they are doing improv, or teaching a class. Spotify is not only a great resource for music inspiration but also for the curated playlists it makes for users.

No more stressing over modern dance gift ideas. This list covers unique and thoughtful options that truly stand out from the usual. Whether its a creativity-boosting book by Twyla Tharp , or the magical Apolla socks, each gift is sure to bring a smile to any modern/contemporary dancers face! Happy gifting!
